those supposed people who "speak" with the dead are they for real? is there any way to tell.?
i have a sister who is totally into "psychics" who can tell the future and see the dead...how can we know if they are truthful?

Hi Paula,
I'd like to offer my opinion, with the full disclaimer that I do not believe in the existence of supernatural phenomena. I do not believe it is possible for anyone to contact the dead.
Since it isn't possible to tell if "psychics" are truthful, I hope the following suggestions will at least help you discern if a given individual is being honest to the best of their ability, or is just trying to separate your sister from her money. I would also give the exact same advice to someone who questions the motives of a magical "psychic" or a non-magical Psychiatrist: Is the person hurting more than they are helping? Do they want too much money? Is the patient or client becoming dependent on that person? Is the client withdrawing from friends and family? Is the patient or client being encouraged to do things that are drastic, dangerous or just doesn't make sense?
Even though I don't believe in psychics, it is possible that someone may truly believe that they have psychic abilities. If they believe it, they are not lying. They may have nothing but pure intentions. So if, say, "Jenny Fairy the self-proclaimed psychic" really believes that she has prophetic dreams and likes to share that and any insight gleaned with her friends and doesn't ask anything in return, I would not think of her claims as "lies." She could be legitimately perceptive and may have good advice for her friends. I might think Jenny's invocation of the supernatural is not an accurate description of what is going on, but she is being honest to the best of her ability. :-)
If said psychic is intentionally lying, then that person is a psychopath, and it will be very difficult to spot a lie. These people prey on those who are grieving and in pain. If say, "Sylvia Beige the self proclaimed psychic" is running a very lucrative business promising happiness and wealth based on her "psychic" ability, and only helps people after they pay her hundreds of dollars for her services, I'd question her motives.
Yes, of course people have to make money, but I have noticed that when people genuinely want to help others, they are willing to do what they can for free. A person like "Jenny Fairy" may set up shop, sell trinkets, and read palms (or what have you) for a few bucks, but she would probably also offer her opinions for free. She has no intent to harm or deceive.
Someone like "Sylvia Beige" will only talk to you AFTER you pay $850 (not a typo; eight hundred fifty dollars) for her services. She's a psychopath. If you are worried about your sister, look out for the following things: find out if this psychic is charging her a great deal of money. Very important, try to ascertain if she is becoming depressed or if she was depressed already, if her depression is getting worse, not better. Be VERY concerned if the psychic is encouraging her to make changes in her life that strike you as being unhelpful, drastic or dangerous. Also be concerned if she is withdrawing from you and the rest of her family and becoming dependent on the advice of the psychic.
If your sister is into psychics but is otherwise happy, healthy and functioning normally, you may not have anything to worry about. :-)
All the best,
Lily -

People can believe things that are not true. I don't deal with psychics. I'm sorry, proof of honesty or not.
